Economy and Business

Introduction

Welcome to your course in Economy & Business. This course challenges us to bring a Catholic imagination to bear upon our activities of commerce and exchange.

The subsequent lessons will help us to develop an understanding of economics grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Thought, with the hope that, equipped with a true vision of the human person and society, we can act as agents of insight and justice in all affairs related to business and exchange.

Law and Political Order

Introduction

Welcome to your course in Law and Political Order. This course begins a series in which we will consider how our lay vocation may invite us to engage in a number of sectors in society.

To lead us through this course, we are privileged to have with us Russell Hittinger, Warren Professor of Catholic Studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Tulsa.

The subsequent lessons will help us investigate the principles of US political society so that we can better understand where and how we might be called to respond to our own national, state, and local policies and practices.

Evangelization

Introduction

John_Roche_SDB

Welcome to your course in Evangelization, the heart of our work as apostles of our Lord.

To lead us through this course, we are privileged to have with us Fr. John Roche, SDB. Fr. John has ministered as a Salesian in many capacities: as a high school teacher, chaplain and staff member of St. Mary’s boarding school in Edmonton, Alberta Canada; as the Youth Ministry Delegate for the Western Province; the first director/president of St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School in Watsonville, CA; and as an adjunct professor and Director of the Institute of Salesian Studies at the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology in Berkeley, CA.

Currently, Fr. John is the Vocation Director for the Salesians of USA – West, while also serving on the provincial formation team.

This course will address all of these questions, establishing a basis upon which we will build throughout the remainder of the year. Beginning with a look at the kerygma, the initial proclamation of our Lord, we will reflect upon the ways in which we as lay men and women are called to stand in his place and to proclaim–and to be–the Good News.

What does is mean to evangelize? How do we go about it? What, if anything, is truly good about the “Good News”?

Introduction

Welcome to your course in Liturgy, which will be conducted as a dialogue between Lay Mission Project team members, Fr. Michael Sweeney, OP, and Sean Bryan.

Reading

Throughout this Lesson, you will need access to the following resources:

  • The Bible
  • Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei (1947)
  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church

PLEASE NOTE:

For your planning purposes, please note that, idiosyncratically, there are four topics in Lesson 2 and two topics in Lesson 3.

Faith Formation

Introduction

Welcome to your seminar on Faith Formation. Now that your own formation is well underway, we will be looking more closely at what is meant by “formation,” particularly as it relates to a term that may be more familiar: “catechesis.”

This seminar on Faith Formation will be conducted in a format that differs slightly from that of the previous courses. Because the essence of formation is to see our Lord in the concrete circumstances of your life, and to conform yourself to him, it would be most helpful to conduct the lessons through a “living dialogue.” In the videos to come, you will see this dialogue unfolding between two disciples attempting to understand, together, how the Lord has revealed himself in their own lives, and how he asks them to witness him to others.

Reading

All readings for this course will be available online.
